Understanding the Private Label Exclusion

To ensure adherence to regulatory standards and facilitate appropriate pharmacy inventory orders, Macro Helix maintains and utilizes a Private Label Exclusion List that facilitates splitting of NDCs that are private-labeled and only available on group purchasing (GPO) accounts. Macro Helix populates and maintains this list by identifying NDCs that are only available to purchase on GPO accounts (i.e., the NDC cannot be ordered on a WAC or 340B account). To view items on the Private Label Exclusion List, follow these steps:

1   Go to Overview > Pharmacy Accumulations or Maintenance > Drug Catalog.

2   Click the View Exclusions tab.

3   In the Exclusion Type field, select MHI Private Label.
A list of excluded NDCs appears.

Why is the Private Label Exclusion List Necessary?

The Private Label Exclusion List is designed to facilitate inventory ordering when an NDC is not available for purchase on the 340B and WAC accounts (the NDC can only be purchased on the GPO account). Because of the GPO Exclusion requirements mandated by the Office of Pharmacy Affairs, NDCs only available for purchase on the GPO account cannot be utilized for outpatient patients while maintaining compliance with the program regulations. In many cases, these particular NDCs are used by the hospital for a variety of patients. Macro Helix will continue to evaluate each patient dose and will classify each dose as 340B, GPO or WAC. When a private label NDC is utilized, the GPO accumulation within 340B Architect will continue to reflect documented inpatient patient consumption. However with some of these NDCs, ordering is not possible at 340B or WAC pricing. Therefore, Macro Helix proactively limits the purchased quantities of these NDCs to only what has accumulated on the GPO account at the time of the order.

For example, 4 packages have accumulated on the GPO account for a Private Label NDC. The pharmacy attempts to buy 10 packages. 340B Architect allows 4 packages to be purchased on the GPO account but rejects the remaining 6 packages since the NDC cannot be purchased on the 340B or WAC accounts. When order quantities of a Private Label NDC are restricted due to insufficient GPO accumulation, Macro Helix immediately sends an email alert to one or more 340B Architect users at the affected hospital alerting them to the restriction. The user determines if an alternative NDC should be ordered.* If an alternative NDC is ordered, the normal order splitting process is followed to facilitate 340B, GPO, and WAC purchases.

*Customers should independently confirm that all alternative NDCs ordered are appropriate. If you have any questions about these determinations, you are advised to seek legal counsel.

Request an Item for Inclusion

The Private Label Exclusion List is universal and not customizable by hospital. However, you can request Macro Helix to add an item to the list. Once your request is received, Macro Helix researches the item and determines if it is a universally applicable item. If an item is not GPO-exclusive, it is automatically deemed ineligible. You cannot add 340B eligible items to this list. If the item is eligible, it is added to the list. The approval process takes 5-7 business days.
